When the Colony was re-occupied it was
necessary for Government to take over temporarily
a number of non-Government hospitals which were not in a position to finance themselves. These hospitals have now reverted to the control of their own governing bodies but in the case of the Tung Wah Group and the No thersole it has been necessary to subsidise them in order to enable thom to carry on.

Other Charges
The not increase of $188,960 is,
principally accounted for by an additional $26,800 for Cleaning Materials, $30,480 for Rent of Premises, $77,500 for the Upkeep of Hospital Equipment, $60,000 for Washing and $35,000 for the Upkeep of Motor
Vehicles. Minor increases and decreases occur under other sub-heads.
Expenditure on the whole Head shows a
reduction of 8477,244.
Hoad 19B. Relief Section
Every effort is being made to reduce the expenditure as far as possible but the number of destitute persons unfortunately shows little sign of diminishing. A roduction of $19,372 has been effected under Personal Emoluments as a result of a reduction in administration costs but there is an increase of $86,000 in the running exponses of the King's Park Orphanage as this is now full to capacity with_orphans who are one of the unfortunate legacies of the Japanese occupation. Economies have been affected in the Rental of Buildings and tho not decrcase on the whole Head is $119,222.
